Project Summary

Ace Film and Media College is a premier Canadian visual arts college that provides a free Photo and Video equipment loaning service to its students and currently tracks the loaned equipment manually. The College has decided to create a web application that combines the functionalities of Checking in/out equipment and maintaining the equipment inventory.

Problem

The part-time equipment inventory managers need an inventory application to keep track of overdue items and notifying students and update inventory information because the current inventory management system which is manually check-in check-out equipment (using paper forms) is laborious, hard to keep track of overdue items, and notifying students and not easy to maintain and update inventory information.

Solution

The part of the application that I designed which is specifically for inventory managers is based on user-centered design. I create the dashboard screen like the manager’s workspace the way that s/he can see all the important and urgent information and part of hers/his work at a glance without even going to other sections unless for updating or figuring out some details of equipment’s info.

Also, keep a clean and simple, and accessible design with a thoughtful and simple language that makes zero effort from users to learn and adapt. Besides managers can see their colleagues’ updates and any changes made which will be reduced rework.

Ideation

My goal as a UX designer was to design the app in a way that speeds up our user’s workflow, enhances learnability, easy navigation, and increases visibility by simple and clear design. I wanted my user can track, maintain and update inventory easily and fast effortlessly with zero chance of making any mistakes. Also, all part-time inventory managers can track and rely on each other’s updates to avoid any mistakes or rework.

Design Principles

• Set information in a logical, natural order.
• Make things easy to find.
• Design with aesthetics and minimalism in mind
• Make designs efficient and streamlined.
• Use “less is more”
• Be consistent with navigational mechanisms
• Reduce distractions
• Using simple and clear language and void jargon
